U3A stands for University of the Third Age. ‘University’ in the original sense of a “community where those eager to learn meet those eager to teach”. So U3A is about sharing skills and interests. It is about keeping minds active and in touch with others, especially in retirement years. It is also about having a good time while learning. Just look at our programme.
U3A began in France in the 1970s initially to cater for retired folk who wanted to keep their minds active. The idea spread to England and, eventually to Australia. U3A is a self help movement in which the organization and activities are run by members themselves.
Costs are kept low with tutors coming from within the group and providing time on a voluntary basis.
